More Than Half Of Murdered Women Are Killed By An Ex Or Current Partner https://femicidescensus.org/more-than-half-of-murdered-women-are-killed-by-an-ex-or-current-partner/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=more-than-half-of-murdered-women-are-killed-by-an-ex-or-current-partner Thu, 20 Feb 2020 15:22:47 +0000 https://femicidescensus.org/?p=411 Karen Ingala Smith tells Grazia magazine that addressing men’s violence against women in a piecemeal way will not bring about a reduction in men’s violence against women.  Women are dying and until politicians focus on creating real change and ambitious engagement with tacking sex inequality, rather than winning votes with virtue-signalling soundbites, women will continue to be harmed and killed.

Honouring the victims of gender violence https://femicidescensus.org/honouring-the-victims-of-gender-violence/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=honouring-the-victims-of-gender-violence Wed, 07 Dec 2016 18:16:46 +0000 https://femicidescensus.org/?p=255 Covering the release of the first Femicide Census report (2009-2015), Sarah Ditum picks up the challenge to the use of the phrase ‘isolated incident’, so often used by police in relation to men’s fatal violence against women. She looks at sex differences, noting that whilst homicide rates have fallen, femicide rates have remained stable. Ditum explores selective reporting that reveals which women are deemed valuable and which are not.

Why does a woman stay with a violent man? https://femicidescensus.org/why-does-a-woman-stay-with-a-violent-man/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=why-does-a-woman-stay-with-a-violent-man Wed, 07 Dec 2016 16:46:14 +0000 https://femicidescensus.org/?p=358 Writing a piece to accompany the release of the first Femicide Census report (2009-2015), co-founder Karen Ingala Smith explores how the Femicide Census statistics show us that leaving a violent man is not a straightforward way to escape his danger as at least a third of women killed by a partner or ex-partner were killed after leaving him and of these, approximately three-quarters were killed in the first year.

She outlines how one of the most important things about the Femicide Census is that it looks beyond intimate partner violence, for example to women killed through involvement in prostitution. She addresses the need for a huge shift in norms such as socially constructed gender and the objectification of women that are needed to reduce men’s violence against women.
